Alternative economies are diverse and the approaches emphasize principles such as sustainability, social justice, participation and democratic decision-making as a counter-model to purely financially profitable enterprises. Frequently discussed approaches include the solidarity economy, the economy for the common good, the sharing economy, the ecological economy or post-growth economies, e.g. the "donut economy". The IAT primarily researches approaches and models of the local economy, regional value chains, the welfare economy and socio-ecologically oriented economies. The focus of our research is on spatial enterprises, social innovations, new business models and start-ups. In this way, we contribute to practical solutions and concrete local implementations.
