Abstract:

The project about industrial potential in East Westphalia is structured in four parts.

Firstly, the project points out the regional core competencies: machines, tools and con-cepts for industrial processes, high quality production and health care services.

Secondly, an analysis of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) is included. This SWOT-analysis shows strong regional ties. These ties are based on strong and highly integrated small and medium companies and a high level of informal networks. These networks give excellent opportunities for cross-sectoral innovation on the one hand, on the other hand they are in danger of creating lock-in processes, when they are not open for external impulses.

Thirdly, ten industrial sectors are studied asking for innovative capacity, regional net-works, up-coming trends and regional co-operation potential. These sectors are: Food industry, furniture works and its suppliers, mechanical and electrical engineering, auto-mobile suppliers, health care, information and communications technologies, bio tech-nologies and new energy technologies.

Fourthly, the results are grouped around three lead-projects. These projects aim at sup-porting the foundation of science based, production related services, the strengthening of the regional science and research base and on organising innovative networks.
